A Blog from Greece – Life at The Lemon Tree on Crete Lusting after Pasta… Pasta can be eaten as a quick snack or a meal in itself; it has many forms. A pot of boiling water and it can be ready to eat in a matter of minutes.
As an everyday meal to many Greeks, pasta is popular both as a side dish or a main dish as it offers a mean fill and will keep you going for longer than something from the snack bar.
You can buy pasta ready made, dried or from the fridge. Plain or filled or you can make it yourself. On the shelves of the many stores on Crete (like elsewhere) there are many different types of pasta: spaghetti, taglitelli, macaroni and variations that you would not think possible. Some have durum wheat and some are semolina based, my thoughts on this are that they are all lovely cooked, drizzled with some good olive oil, salt and pepper and some freshly grated parmesan; you could not ask for more. It is a sublime meal in itself.

A Blog from Greece – Life at The Lemon Tree on Crete Lusting after Love …. Time to make a little treat for Valentine’s Day! This is just a very simple and quick idea for a little present of love for Valentine’s Day.
All you will need is a bar of dark chocolate (about 200g)
And a small handful of cardamom seeds (6 – 8)

A Blog from Greece – Life at The Lemon Tree on Crete Lusting after a Chinese spring roll… For many years I bought these little tasty morsels fresh or frozen from the supermarket or freshly made from the Chinese take-away and I must say I did like them quite a lot. Living in Kent there was a lovely little Chinese restaurant just up on the corner of the road. I had some very good meals from it and cannot complain which is very unusual for chefs and especially for me. Spring rolls served with a portion of rice or chips, some gravy or curry sauce made a great little filler and was not a bad meal at all. I was not a regular at the shop but we knew each other.

A Blog from Greece – Life at The Lemon Tree on Crete I love cake and all things to do with cake but have to confess that before moving to Crete I never did any baking – I would pick up cakes from the supermarket or bakers. My friend Jayne baked some lovely cookies when I saw her and they were lovely warm to eat straight out of the oven; I have carried this memory with me for a long time on these shores far from home. I did once pick up a ready made cookie mix packet (that in truth I don’t really think counts as baking yourself, more a kind of assembling) but they were lovely and were enjoyed on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

A Blog from Greece – Life at The Lemon Tree on Crete As easy as meatballs... A little ball of meat, so scrummy! They have been made for hundreds of years, if not centuries. They can be pork, lamb or fish depending in which part of the world that you live in (and of course they can be of vegetables too but that then means they aren’t meatballs anymore but some other tasty combination). They can accompany soup, spaghetti, tomato sauce or be just by themselves, not forgetting serving them with the lovely Handras potato.
